Orca, named J35, gave birth to a healthy calf, named J57, off the Northwestern Coast of North America. This is the first time a new calf has been born since May 2019.
The Southern Resident Orca population is endangered so every birth counts as there are only 73 individuals left. The Orca population has gone through quite a bit of stress over the past 80 years having to deal with Captivity, Plastic Pollution, Overfishing, and a decrease in Salmon numbers due to the number of dams along the Western shores of North America.
The healthy birth of J57 gives us a bit of hope to ensure that the Orca population becomes healthy again (over 150 individuals).
