Rebuilding Fisheries in our Oceans: The Challenges and Progress in Canadian Fisheries Management

Rebuilding fisheries requires information on fisheries stock assessments for each species. Collecting that data is not easy; it takes time and money. The Canadian Government is mandated to gather information on the 200 commercially fished species, but it's lacking. Not to worry. Ocean Canada has taken on the burden of collecting and presenting the fisheries information in their Annual Fisheries Audit.

In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin welcomes Fisheries Scientist Rebecca Schijns from Oceana Canada to discuss the 8th annual Fisheries Audit. They dive deep into the health status of Canada's fisheries, exploring the latest statistics on fish populations, including the concerning trends in critical and uncertain categories.

Rebecca shares insights on the work Oceana Canada has been doing since 2017 to assess fish stocks and the importance of these audits in holding the government accountable for sustainable fisheries management. They discuss the positive developments in rebuilding plans for critically depleted stocks like cod and mackerel and the challenges posed by recent decisions to increase quotas despite the stocks being in cautious zones.

The conversation also touches on the impacts of climate change on fisheries, the need for better management practices, and the role of citizen advocacy in pushing for change. With a focus on transparency and accountability, this episode highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure that Canada’s fisheries are managed sustainably for future generations.
